somewhere on mugglenet i think it was suggested that dudley was born a wizard and that petunia had a deal withdumbledore to protect harry as long as dudley was not involved in the magical world at all.
i thought this was interesting........not very believeable, in fact it would just be stupid. but fun to discuss nevertheless.
pro evidence:
1)when hagrid cast a spell on dudley to make him a pig, dudley did not fully change to a pig, just got a tail. dudley was very scared at the time and we know that when wizards feel a very strong emotion, such as fear, they can perform magic. so, possibly dudley, without meaning to, fought the spell. the fact that he "was too much like a pig already" was not very believeable.
2) the diet he went on didnt seem to work. harry could grow back his hair. maybe dudley could gain back his weight.
con evidence:
1) hagrid only when to hogwarts for 3 years. he couldnt have mastered human transfiguration. and he was using half of a wand.
2)perhaps he snuck food, his diet plain old didnt work, or maybe it did work and im remembering wrong.
The reason Dudley didn't change into a full pig was because Hagrid wasn't very good at magic because he was exspell from Hogwarts and his wand had been snapped in half. I have been reading the books backwards so far. Haven't read number six yet. _________________
No, Dudley isn't a wizard. The diet wasn't working, because Dudley loves to eat, and he could have covertly eaten food. Hagrid has never been good at magic, and as Lilly said he was expelled from Hogwarts. Only someone like Dumbledore could have turned Dudley completely into a pig. And if he was a wizard, Dudley might have discovered his powers by now. You can't 'squash the magic out of someone' as Aunt Petunia tried to do with Harry. So Dudley would have been freely abusing his powers.
While it is kind of a fun theory, I don't think it's true. As someone else already said, Dudley would have discovered his powers by now if he were a wizard.

Maybe it is Petunia?
Her sister was a witch after all, and maybe she never tried or put any stock into it because she hated it and thought it was rubbish, Maybe she somehow protects Harry in an unexpected way?
I like that entire Petunia thory... I think she has started to like Harry, even if she doesn't know it yet...

Well, JKR said that Petunia is definately NOT a witch and will NOT do magic. But if Dudley was a wizard, they would have realized it in SS/PS. They never really talked with Dumbledore, Dumbledore just left a note. Aunt Petunia probably knew that DD would know whether they had taken Harry in or not.
