| I don't know about that. If James was so intent on having fun at Snape's expense as they say he was, who's to say that he wouldn't look through Snape's stuff in order to find ways to humiliate him? Plus, I may just be remembering things wrong, but did Snape necessarily make that one up himself, or could he have simply found it elsewhere and written it in his book? Just speculation, as I'm not quite sure myself. |

| I agree James didn't "look through his things" maybe Snape used it and it caught on. Or perhaps it was a trend someone just re-invented |

| ya i agree^^ James probably heard Snape use it on himself or someone around him. That would explain why Snape said all of that "dont use my own spells against me like your father did." in flight of the prince in HBP. |

Or may be... I don't know... aghhhhhh too much thinking for my little blonde head... If Snape was following them all day long (in the memory of Snape, after the exman, he follows James around) he could have admired them in some twisted-snamelike way adn told them... god knows... no, wait, JKR knows... _________________ Sonita |

it seems that james like to torture snape and he would probably sink to any depth to make his life miserable. _________________ I`m a prep! |

Woot, good question!!
I agree that James probably saw or heard Snape using it on a different student and started using it himself although you'd think James would be too arrogant to use a spell his loathed enemy invented. _________________ His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad,

So maybe, it's well known among the Death Eaters or something. Did they learn it from Snape? Or copied it, more like, coz I don't think Snape would teach anybody his spells. _________________ Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus

Well, Snape did the Sepctrumsemtra on him. If you read the passage of where James does the spell. Snape does a curse which James just dodges but it skims his face and cuts him DEEP. _________________ Long live the Dark Lord! |

This reminds me of what Luna was saying to Harry at the end of OotP, how other students just take her things and she has to post a bulletin at the end of each year asking them to please return her belongings. Snape, another such "odd" individual, though perhaps not quite as ridiculous in personality as Luna, might have had similar problems. Certainly it would be possible for James and Sirius to steal Snape's textbooks, wouldn't it?
Would someone remind me...the handwriting in Harry's book, saying it belonged to the Half-Blood Prince...is it the same handwriting as all the spells within it? I wondered this because of Hermione saying something about some of the handwriting looking like it might have been done by a girl. Perhaps poverty-stricken Snape was forced to purchase a used book, which was rich with gifts, including the Potion hints and the spells? This might account for Snape's particular expertise in Potions when he was young, though he still favored the Dark Arts. Generally aren't we more interested in the subjects in which we excel? I know I would have been a lot more interested in Chemistry if I had ANY talent for it at all. If Snape's true expertise lay in the field of Potions, why would he want more than anything to teach DADA? I speculate he was more interested in DADA because he had a gift for Dark magic--a thought that doesn't bode well for his current situation, where we're all wondering if he's good or bad. _________________ "Wow, I wonder what it'd be like to have a difficult life," said Harry sarcastically. |

Ah, and to amend my last post, I'd like to add that after some considerable thought, I have begun to wonder if perhaps Snape's "used book" might have originally belonged to his mother? There's nothing to suggest that there are "new" editions of the text required for students in particular years, since Harry and Ron didn't seem to have any trouble using the old books Slughorn found for them.
I wonder if perhaps the feminine handwriting in the book belonged to Eileen Prince and she was just as nasty a piece of work as was Snape himself. _________________ "Wow, I wonder what it'd be like to have a difficult life," said Harry sarcastically. |

Like Lupin said spells go in and out of style. It happened to be "in" at that time. _________________
