I ask all experts: how come Snape is trying to stop Voldermort from getting the Stone in Book 1 and admits to be (at least apparently) on Voldemort's side (when discussing with Bellatrix). Thx.

I believe that too but JK will probably let us die with some unavoidable plot inconsistencies...

In Book 1 Snape doesn't know that Voldemort is actually hiding under Quirrels turban. All Snape sees is a professor trying to steal the stone for themself, even though that's not the case.
Since I believe Snape to be on Dumbledore's side I believe that when Snape confronts Quirrel about his loyalties he is asking him if he would really steal the stone from Dumbledore just because he's a greedy wizard. Altho it is possible (albeit a small possiblity) that Snape knows Voldemort is under the turban and he doesn't want the stone to fall into his hands (if he is loyal to Dumbledore, that is!) . _________________ "Blocked again and again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!"

That's right. In answer to Bellatrix's question, Snape says that he didn't know that Voldemort was under the turban. He was trying to stop Quirell from getting the Stone. Besides, Snape was probably bluffing to Bellatrix about being loyal to Voldemort. What else could he say? And he was disobeying Voldemort's orders by interfering in Malfoy's mission. He was trying to protect Malfoy. Voldemort wouldn't have liked that as he wanted to Malfoy to succeed or die trying. There aren't many(or any)Death Eaters who would dare defy their master's orders or interfere with his plans in any way. If Snape was utterly loyal he would have refused to help Narcissa. And one more thing. Sanpe informed the Order about Harry and his friends' dissapearance in Book 5, when they went to the ministry. If he was a Death Eater, he would have been confident that his comrades could easily take care of a bunch of teenagers. And he could have pretended he didn't know, because they escaped after he left Umbridge's office. He could have said, that when he came back to check they were missing. By informing the Order he was stopping the Death Eaters from getting the Prophecy which was crucial for Voldemort's success. He's on Dumbledore's side. _________________ Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus

I agree with Siddhu. All of Snape's actions at the end of OOTP and during HBP go against Voldemort. Voldemorts followers are afraid of him, that's why most of them stay loyal to him, because of fear. Fear is a very powerful emotion! If Snape was utterly loyal to Voldemort he would never think of going against him, because his fear of him would overpower his urge to betray him.
Snape may, at times, do something that shows he is a DE, but 99.9% of his actions go against Voldemort. _________________ "Blocked again and again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!"

Well, would you admit anything else when talking to Bellatrix?
I think Snape is on the 'good' side, but if Voldemort won or was certain to win, I'm sure Snape wouldn't continue fighting for the 'good' side. Up until the end of HBP, he was considered an ally by both sides, so whichever won he'd still benefit. So I think he is loyal to Dumbledore, but not so loyal that he'd put himself second rather than first. If that makes any sense. |

Well, maybe. That'd be typical Slytherin fashion. _________________ Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus

Either that or he is totally committed to the 'good' side. From the clues in canon, I can't draw the conclusion that he is totally committed to Voldemort. He's either in the middle working for himself, or on the 'good' side. I like to think the latter.

I agree with those of you that say Snape is in the middle. It would be true Slytherin fashion if he was playing both sides for his benefit. He would appear to be on Voldemorts side, but he would also appear to be on Dumbledores side, which would put him in the perfect spot to be able to side with the ones that win, and nobody would ever think twice about it.
Slytherins only look out for themselves, and they will do whatever it takes to ensure their survival. Thus, it's pretty damn smart of Snape to put himself in the good graces of both sides. If he was loyal to only one side, and that side lost he would be screwed. _________________ "Blocked again and again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!"

Heh, I'm very much against Snape at the moment. Somehow I really think he's on Voldemort's side, and was pretending to be good all along. I mean, after all, if he were good, why would he bother with all that yelling at Harry after he killed Dumbledore and was trying to escape? He hated James, remember, and he nearly died because of the werewolf-joke-incident-thing. Bet he was only trying to get his revenge, in the typical sneaky Slyterin way.
Sorry, I'm just more than a little angry at Snape at the moment... I might change my opinion after another rereading of the book... -shrugs- Who knows? _________________ I was born intellligent, but education ruined me.

I am in hopes that Snape is actually a good guy and that Dumbledore wouldn't have been out smarted by the likes of Snape.
