first off, let me start by saying i don't specifically have a favorite book. i love the first, third and fifth. i wrote a message like this in the movie section (which you should check out), but i've got to say this is one of my favorite harry potter books. sure, it's short.. but it's amazing. i loved the fact that this book was like the starting point. you were learning everything and you were getting hooked on to it for the first time. to me, it was amazing. by the first few lines i read, i got hooked. i couldn't put it down. this book made me love reading. thanks, JK rowling. thanks for teaching me how to enjoy reading. the movie was the best, and this book was one of the best books. i love the fact that they were all so young and naive, and now it seems like they know so much (it's not a bad thing, but it's a huge change). i love all the harry potter books, and this one (specifically) has had a huge impact on me, along with the movie. this book is amazing, and it'll never get old.
anyone else agree with me?
there's got to be some people that do!

i completely agree. she had so many ways to expand it, and she did. the chamber of secrets were grade too. as were the following books after that.

I think the fact that the first book was so short and left so many questions, and yet described a wonderful hidden world, left many people ripe for the plucking when book two came out. There is so much detail in so little space that you can't help but wonder why she has never written anything else before now. Also all the books are pretty intertwined and a lot of things that happen in early books play a huge part later on in some of the sequels.

Personally, I think it's an exaggeration to say that book one is "awesome". To me, the first and second were "good", the third and fourth were "great", five was "awesome", and six was "ridiculously excellent!!".
The only reason I say this is because of her genius. Or should I say her editor's genius.
Book One is written about an 11 year old boy and as such she has written to her intended audience. I read book one and then six right away and you could OBVIOUSLY see that she matured her writing style as Harry matured. It was almost as if she could only write his life in an age-appropriate way, as to not become too dark too soon.
This is why she is a genius. |

I somewhat agree with Firenze_Fan (is that right) the writing of the books did change however i have read the first book a fair few times because it is short and makes me smile. None of the worries of the later books its all just pretty happy really even the fight scene towards the end never seems all that scary.

i agree except i do think this is a EXCELLTENT book along with all the others !

i read it again directly after seven, and i miss having so many questions and being so excited for what was going to happen next.
harry, ron, and hermione were so innocent! they thought that a mountain troll was one of their worst fears...
and poor harry...
"harry expected voldemort to come bursting through the door at any moment."
that part actually made me laugh, because i understand so much more about it, and of course voldemort wasn't going to come bursting through the door, he was to busy ripping his soul apart.

well said. that's what i love about her. her writing skills developed at the same pace that harry did. she's brilliant.

It was a good book, but last year I had to read it for a Philosophy class (Philosophy of Children's Literature) and it made me not want to read it. my professor got so into talking about the little things it got boring. He wanted us to talk about the things we didnt want to talk about. Though I have to admit that taking the class did help analyze the book in another way...but not the way I wanted to. I like to figure out the books on my own and not in a philosophical way.
does that make sense? |

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. If you read a book by yourself you can grasp ideas on your own and form your own opinions and beliefs on certain parts. |

| After not reading this book in so long, I started again last night. Which I had never realized before what excellent writing it is, especially for a first book. She was incredibly smart doing leaving it open so that she could spin it off any way she chooses. |

| The first book is the best written, in my opinion, of all the books I've currently reread (OotP, HPB, DH, S(P)S, in that order). |
