| So what do you think of Voldemort as a villain? Do you think he is a good villain or do you dislike him as a villain and think Rowling could have done better. Most people compare him with Darth Vader and Sauron and opinions vary. Do you think there are villains in other stories who are better and more convincing? |

As a villian I like him because he is easy to hate. There is not much compassion that can be given to him. At first, you want to, even Harry felt bad for him because he could empathize with him, being an orphan and all. But unlike Harry, Tom wasn't mistreated, instead he went around abusing others. He is evil through and through without any hope of redemption. ALthough his character is very one dimensional, it works. Because we are on Harry's side, wanting him to succeed in destroying the Horcruxes and ending Voldemort's life so he can't harm anyone else.
I also noticed the parallels between Darth Vader and Voldemort, but I think Voldemort os a cross between Darth Vader and that other guy, Vader's mentor-guy. The one who also physically changes. Ugh, you know who I'm talking about. The little guy in the cloak. Not Yoda, the bad guy, the one who rises to power... anyway, yeah, I think Voldemort is a cross between the two. And it's not surprising both series have similar elements to them, political, mythical, epic... so it's not surprising there are definite parallels.
I think the best villians are the ones most feared... the ones who can't just slap across the face and that's the end of the story. The best villians are the ones that no matter how fast you run or how far you go... you just can only barely manage to stay a stay ahead, only to discover that they are already there. As if they could read your mind. Sort of like Voldemort.
By far my favorite villian is Umbridge and all the Umbridge-like villians. She was evil, without being a Death Eater. She was shades of gray and there was no stopping her, she had absolute power.

yeah thats the kind of villain i like, the undefeatable ones. the reason why they are alive is because they dont die as easily as the regular mortal. you want semi immoprtal villains. because the story wont exist without the villain
however, i wish i could see a voldie who is more tricky and cunning and very persuasive. we only get to see the evil, bloodthirsty side of him. i want to see how he manages to convince people, like a snake. sorta like galbatorix, always trying to see what he can gain from by doing this or that...

I've always enjoyed his role as a villain, it has that edge that you want to hate him for what he's done (And what he did to his face! He was better waay back!) but you feel sorry for him and he grew up on his own really with no proper family.

That's just it, I don't feel bad for Voldemort because he grew up without a proper family. Harry was abused and he turned out just fine. I think that's what makes Voldemort's evilness so unique. There is no real reason as to why he is the way he is, besides the fact that he craves power.

yes you can see the contrast. an impt theme of the hp series is CHOICES. they both grow up in the same environment but they turned out very differntly. while one became loving and compassionate, the other one becamse a meanie, a tyrnat. well you cant always predict what will happen to a person, or the choices he/she will decide to take in his life. but its for sure that there has to be a reason why they act that way.
voldie couldnt have been born bad or simply chose to be bad for the heck of it. he is a sociopath, and we dont have to judge him too harshly because that is a psychological sickness.

Voldy is a great villain. and I love how we get to see into his past. Tom Riddle is facinating. I do not feel sorry for him though...harry and none of the other children in that orphanage turned into messed up individuals. I think he's just evil. That plus the Gaunt inbreeding.

| Voldemort is scary even though we aren't even in the story. That is why he is a really good villian. But I don't really think villian is the right word for him. Evil is what he should be classified as. |

thats what i was thinking. i got the idea for this thread from this list of 50 greatest villians http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI's_100_Years..._100_Heroes_and_Villains
as you can see he is not on their but i think he does somewhere and their are a few on the list that i don't think they should be
some examples are
the shark (Jaws) the shark is an animal and just does what it does to survive. it doesn't have a conscience or thoughts (except in that god awful 4th jaws movie)
the terminator- as much as i like the T-800 and T-1000, they are robots just doing what they are told
the alien- like the saying "she'll breed, you'll die" the alien is just doing what it was breed to do. |
