im part of this other hp forums. they posted a thread on quirrell. id like to share it with you. the words in caps are my answers. the words in small font are the moderator's words.

Let's start the discussion for this thread with Quirrell's boastful tirade:

"But Snape tried to kill me!"

"No, no, no. I tried to kill you. Your friend Miss Granger accidentally knocked me over as she rushed to set fire to Snape at that Quidditch match. She broke my eye contact with you. Another few seconds and I'd have got you off that broom. I'd have managed it before then if Snape hadn't been muttering a countercurse, trying to save you."

"Snape was trying to save me?"

"Of course," said Quirrell coolly. "Why do you think he wanted to referee your next match? He was trying to make sure I didn't do it again. Funny, really... he needn't have bothered. I couldn't do anything with Dumbledore watching. All the other teachers thought Snape was trying to stop Gryffindor from winning, he did make himself unpopular... and what a waste of time, when after all that, I'm going to kill you tonight."

There's something a bit peculiar with this part. So Snape was muttering a countercurse, trying to save Harry. Well and good. Makes you wonder... does Snape know who was cursing Harry? Did he ever tell Dumbledore?

And then he wanted to referee the next match. Was it really necessary? Quirrell didn't think so. Do you think so? What if Quirrell tried to kill Harry before that game?

What does Snape know about Quirrell?

MAYBE HE DIDN’T KNOW WHO WAS TRYING TO MAKE HARRY FALL OFF HIS BROOMSTICK. OR MAYBE HE HAD AN IDEA BUT SINCE IT WAS JUST A HUNCH, DIDN’T MENTION IT TO DD. I DUNNO IF QUIRRELL KNOWS OCCLUMENYC, BUT IF HE DOESN’T, SNAPE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GLEAN THE INFO FROM HIM.

I THINK IT WAS UNNECESSARY FOR SNAPE TO REFEREE. IT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE EASIER TO MUTTER ANOTHER COUNTERCURSE FROM AFAR WHERE HE COULD SIT IN PEACE RATHER THAN UP IN A BROOMSTICK WHERE HE RUNS THE RISK OF BEING HIT BY BLUDGERS AND PLAYERS.

~*~*~*~

What I want more than anything else in the world at the moment, he thought, is to find the Stone before Quirrell does. So if I look in the mirror, I should see myself finding it — which means I'll see where it's hidden!

later on in the chapter, Dumbledore explains:

"Ah, now, I'm glad you asked me that. It was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that's saying something. You see, only one who wanted to find the Stone — find it, but not use it — would be able to get it, otherwise they'd just see themselves making gold or drinking Elixir of Life. My brain surprises even me sometimes.... "

Well, it surprises us, too! Hehehe. I was surprised to find, after re-reading the lines after listening to Steve Vander Ark on Pottercast, that there seems to be a bit of a loophole here. "Only one who wanted to find the Stone -- find it, but not use it -- would be able to get it." And so we ask, does Quirrell actually want to use the Stone? Technically? It's actually Voldemort who wants to use the Stone. Granted, they were both living in the same body, and Quirrell would probably have to use it for Voldie, but.... Does that mean the enchantment Dumbledore put on the Stone and the Mirror recognizes that? I know it sounds like a silly thing to bring up, but it does make you think. It'll be great to hear your ideas about this.

MAYBE THE MIRROR SENSED THAT QUIRRELL, YEAH, WHILE HE WANTED TO FIND IT BUT NOT USE IT, WANTED TOGIVE IT TO SOMEONE WHO WOULD USE IT. I THINK THAT YOUR LAST IDEA IS CORRECT. OR MAYBE THE MIRROR SAW VOLDIE IN QUIRRELL AND THUS REFUSED TO RELEASE THE STONE.

another quirrell thread

The first is about Prof. Quirrell. Harry first meets Quirrell in The Leaky Cauldron:

A pale young man made his way forward, very nervously. One of his eyes was twitching.
"Professor Quirrell!" said Hagrid. "Harry, Professor Quirrell will be one of your teachers at Hogwarts."

The notable thing here is that Harry did not describe Quirrell wearing a turban. Going forward to what Quirrell revealed in the last chapters of SS, we now know that he was "punished" by Voldie AFTER Harry first met him.

Don't be confused by what was depicted in the movie. In the movie, Quirrell already was wearing his turban when he and Harry first met. This means that he was already punished by Voldemort by then, and he already made an attempt to steal the Sorcerer's Stone at Gringotts. But in the book, Quirrell made his attempt on the same day Harry went to Gringotts for the first time. Quirrell was unsuccessful because Hagrid already managed to retrieve the Sorcerer's Stone from the vault.

"Oh, yeah. Poor bloke. Brilliant mind. He was fine while he was studyin' outta books but then he took a year off ter get some firsthand experience.... They say he met vampires in the Black Forest, and there was a nasty bit o' trouble with a hag - never been the same since. Scared of the students, scared of his own subject now, where's me umbrella?"

By the way Hagrid's statements were made, it sounds like Quirrell has been at Hogwarts for a while. Since we know (from knowledge taken from future books) that nobody lasts more than a year in the DADA post, then Quirrell taught something else before Harry's first year, other than DADA. What subject could that be?

Also, by Hagrid's statements, it does not seem like Quirrell took his one-year sabbatical the year before Harry's first year. The way he describes Quirrell connotes that Quirrell has been "scared of the students" and "scared of his own subject now" for a while now. If Quirrell was on vacation the year before Harry entered, how would Hagrid know Quirrell was scared of his students if there weren't classes yet that would have caused Hagrid to make those observations? So what was Quirrell teaching the year before he taught DADA? More importantly, how long has he been in contact with Voldemort? When did he take that one-year sabbatical?

IF QUIRRELL TAUGHT A DIFFERENT SUBJECT THE PREVIOUS YEAR, DD SHOULD HAVE MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO HOGWARTS. “I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT PROFESSOR QUIRRELL WILL HAS LEFT HIS OLD POST OF CHARMS AND IS NOW DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS TEACHER.” HE DID NOT.

OR ELSE, IF QUIRRELL RETURNED FROM HIS FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE, DD SHOULD HAVE ANNOUNCED, “I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT PROFESSOR QUIRRELL IS BACK AGAIN TO TEACH US.” HE DID NOT

I DON’T THINK QUIRRELL IS NEW, BECAUSE PERCY KNOWS HIM, AND DD DID NOT ANNOUNCE THAT THEY HAD A NEW DADA PROFESSOR.

THEREFORE I AM INCLINED TO THINK THAT THERE WAS CONTINUITY IN QUIRRELL’S JOB, THAT HE WAS DADA PROFESSOR THE YEAR BEFORE. NOW WHAT I DO NOT KNOW IS WHEN HE WENT TO THE BALCK FOREST.

THEREFORE, IN HBP, WHEN DD SAID THAT THEY HAVE NEVER KEPT A DADA TEACHER FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR AFTER HE DECLINED VOLDIE, I THINK IT WAS AN INCONSISTENCY ON THE PART OF JKR.

ABOUT THE PART WHERE QUIRRELL FIRST MEETS HARRY, AND IS NOT WEARING A TURBAN, I THINK ITS REALLY KEEN OF YOU TO HAVE NOTICED THAT. WOW. NEVER SAW THAT BEFORE. HARRY SHOULD HAVE DESCRIBED HIM AS SUCH. WELL, I THINK THAT HE HAD NO TURBAN AND HAD NO VOLDIE STICKING AT THE BACK OF HIS HEAD. AFTER FAILING TO RETRIEVE THE SORCERER’S STONE, VOLDIE KEPT A CLOSE WATCH ON HIM. QUIRRELL MENTIONED THAT IN THE LAST CHAPTER. HE SAID THAT WHEN HE FAILED TO RETRIEVE THE STONE, VOLDIE WAS MOST DISPLEASED AND KEPT A CLOSE WATCH ON HIM. OOH.. NICE ONE. NEVER NOTICED THAT.

I just thought while reading yorur posts that it is possible that Quirrel started teaching DADA around tha last part of the previous year. In other woeds maybe he started teaching DADA just before school finished the year before Harry went to Hogwarts therefor it would not have been neccessary for Dumbledore to make any announcements.

And there also will be no inconsistancy because he did not teach DADA for more than a year.

could be...

maybe it would look like this?

june 1989: taught DADA, first year of teaching at hogwarts.

june 1990: he went for some first hand experience

mid june 1991: he came back and taught a few weeks of classes. hagrid noticed he's "never been the same since"

sept 1991- early june 1992: sorcerer's stone

= this is the best explanation i can come up with, but it still doesnt sound convincing.

There's something a bit peculiar with this part. So Snape was muttering a countercurse, trying to save Harry. Well and good. Makes you wonder... does Snape know who was cursing Harry?

Yes... Snape was seen threatening Quirell, asking him where his true loyalties lay. Snape knew that Quirell had it in for Harry because Snape knew that Quirell was on the Dark Side, probably by Legilimens.

Did he ever tell Dumbledore?

I wouldn't be surprised if that was why DD was at the next Quidditxch match. DD probably didn't do anything right away about Quirell because he wanted to be sure. But Quirell, seeing that DD was there wouldn't dare try any of that hexing stuff there.

And then he wanted to referee the next match. Was it really necessary? Quirrell didn't think so. Do you think so? What if Quirrell tried to kill Harry before that game?

Of course Quirell could have killed Harry before the game, he could have killed Harry at any time. The game was the perfect cover-up, he tried to make it look like an accident. And he didn't even need his wand, did he? Completely untraceable.

What does Snape know about Quirrell?

That he was treading on the Dark Side. I doubt Snape knew just how far into it Quirell was in, but Snape knew enough.

And about the Stone... Quirell wanted to get it for Voldemort, yes. But that doesn't mean he didn't want to use it, too. Of course he did. Maybe Voldemort even promised him that if he got it, he'd have some, too. Most likely that would have ended up being an empty threat, but whatever.
Harry could get the stone because he didn't want to use it. He didn't care enough, all he cared about was stopping Voldemort. Besides, he was a kid and most kids think they're immortal, anyway, death being so far away and all.

Snape wanted to make sure he was as close to Harry as possible in case Quirell tried anything. And he didn't think Quirell would try anything if Quirell knew that Snape was keeping a close eye on Harry.

Snape didn't make himself highly unpopular by refereeing, he already was with the non-Slytherins, no amount of refereeing was going to make any more unpopular.

so he could catch harry when he falls from his cursed broomstick? he is so powerful he can just simply use a spell that will slow down harry's fall. in fact, he can wingardium leviosa him should he fall. what's the point? oh i get it... he was jealous of james' talent on the quidditch pitch which was why he wanted to appear in the quidditch pitch on a broomstick.
