School Gate is an eductaion blog for Times Online....

The 15 worst teachers in the movies

1) Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
She may be a vision in pink, but Professor Umbridge is not just cruel, she's downright evil.

The rest of the worst teachers...

Quote:
2) Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) in Matilda
Now this is the kind of teacher who really would give children nightmares. Like many of the others, she's a real meanie, but she's also incredibly strong, so throwing children out of the window is one of her ways of dealing with problems.. Pam Ferris is fantastic in this role, and a perfect contrast to the wonderful Miss Honey.

Yes, that's THE Pam Ferris who played Aunt Marge in Prisonoer of Azkaban.

Quote:
3) Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech) in Prom Night (2008 version)
Teachers who are mass murderers - especially those who escape from incarceration - are never a good bet when it comes to the classroom (or indeed, prom night).

I never saw this movie, but I heard it was horrible. Oh well.

Quote:
4) The teachers in The FacultyTeachers who turn into pupil destroying aliens are also not to be recommended. Herrington High boasts a whole roster - including Famke Janssen, Jon Stewart (yes, that Jon Stewart) Salma Hayek and Piper Laurie.

Jon Stewart! *giggles*

Quote:
5) Mr Sugden (Brian Glover) in Kes
Amazingly, Brian Glover was actually a teacher before he became an actor. Let's hope he wasn't anything like Mr Sugden, the overbearing bully of a gym teacher he portrays so brilliantly.

I never saw this one

Quote:
6) Mrs Tingle (Helen Mirren) in Teaching Mrs TingleI admit it, Katie Holmes can be annoying, but I'm not sure that excuses the sadistic Mrs Tingle and her behaviour.

I agree, Katie Holmes can be annoying, which is why I couldn't bear to watch this movie, despite adoring Helen Mirren.

Quote:
7) Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) in Notes on a Scandal
Disenchanted, mean and simply not interested in teaching - Miss Covett is not the kind of teacher you want to encounter in a classroom. And the luminous Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) is not the kind of teacher you would want your son to encounter...

Honestly, during school hours these teachers they were certainly better than most I've had... it's what went on after school hours that I think made them morally reprehensible.

Quote:
8 ) Michel Delassalle (Paul Meurisse) in Les Diaboliques
A sadistic, unpleasant boarding school headmaster, who seems to come to a watery end in this excellent, suspense-packed film.

I actually don't remember seeing this one...

Quote:
9) The teachers in Teachers
This is not a place to go to be educated, as these teachers are one of the worst groups you're likely to come across. The possible stand-out is Ditto (Royal Dano), who gives his class an exam every day so that he can have a kip at the back.

This Ditto teacher sounds like most of the teachers I had...

Quote:
10) Crocker-Harris (Michael Redgrave) in The Browning Version
He's disillusioned with life (his nickname is Himmler), love and especially teaching. And the pupils' lives are miserable - until he learns better...

This dude just sounds lame.

Quote:
11) Edward R Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) in Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Poor Ed Rooney. He knows Ferris is up to something, but is humiliated at every turn. Rather strangely, Rooney is every teenager's idea of an awful teacher, but as you get older, he somehow becomes more understandable.

It's true, I do sympathize with him more now... students like Ferris are spoiled.

Quote:
12) Loretta Creswood (Annie Ross) in Pump up the Volume
I loved this teen film, where Christian Slater plays a renegade DJ! Annie Ross is great as the school principal who gets rid of her, er, more difficult pupils so the school looks better in the league tables (totally unbelievable, isn't it?)

I only remember Christian Slater... I'm fuzzy with the rest of the details....

Quote:
13) Mr Strickland (James Tolkan) in Back to the Future
He's unpleasant, uninspiring and very strict, with no idea how to motivate his students.

How this guy became a principal, I'll never know. Then again, most people should neevr have been allowed to work in the school system, but they do, anyway.

Quote:
14) Principal Vernon (Paul Gleason) in the Breakfast Club
He gives detention on Saturdays? There has to be something wrong with that.

Awww, I like the part where he bonds with the custodian... he has heart. I had hope for this guy.

Quote:
15) Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) in Election
I hesitated to put this one in, because I loved this film, and my sympathies were actually with Broderick (Reese Witherspoon's Tracy Flick was so briliantly and annoyingly perfect). However, I have to admit that fixing a school election just because you don't like a pupil is not really what you want from a teacher.

I felt really bad for this teacher for most of the film. Most, not all.

Shockingly enough, my fifth grade teacher is not on this list. Even The Faculty teachers could have learned some tips on how to be evil from her.

Well personally I think Quirrell was a tad bit worse than Umbridge.

I mean, he did have Voldemort sticking out the back of his head.

but in himself...not nearly as nasty as Umbridge.

I didn't know Aunt Marge was Mrs. Trunchbull!

ARABELLA!!! *pounces*

I thought Lockhart was pretty awful, too. Harry had some pretty awful teachers, didn't he? And, yet, none worse than my fifth grade teacher.

At least Lockhart was good looking.

I'm sure Umbridge would have been more bearable had she been more of Scarlett Johansson look-a-like.

Jon Stewart! *giggles* <--I second that.

The only thing I really remember in this movie was a car scene on the side of a hill and the movie cover.

It's gotta be Umbridge! But maybe it'll change when the Carrows come...

I knew Pam Ferris was Marge and Miss Trunchball. I love Matilda it's a great film and book.

Umbridge, of course, is the worst teacher as far as Order of the Phoenix goes.

But the Carrows in Deathly Hallows are much worse Razz

She could just use a levitation charm on the kids if she wanted them out the window.

I could never put my finger on who it was that aunt Marge sounded like but I totally forgot about the Trunchbull from Matilda! She has that totally great ability to intimidate and belittle someone with her acting.

i think that umbridge is a good teacher but the school system was in err

she was only teaching what the ministry approved. and take it from me some mouthy unruly teenagers should have better punishments than the light punishments that parents give now.

umbridge personifies the need for a more controlled learning environment.

Umbridge controlled the school system, though. The Ministry approved only what she requested based on misinformation that she provided. The Ministry is at fault for trusting her, but she is at fault for being biased and corrupt to begin with. Also, she made very poor decisions regarding the teaching materials she wanted to use.

She wasn't very trustful at all. Taunting professors like shes some general of the school, she didn't use her rights well, she used them for threats and weapons and she is just stupid. Not trusting responsible, fifteen year-old students who just want to learn magic, not right it down and never be able to perform it.

^ No, I'd rather have my teachers than Umbridge! Except prehaps my science teacher...

As for Quirrell being worse than Umbridge, I think Harry actually said that Quirrell was a good teacher, I think.
