It took all of 24 hours for another movie to swoop in and occupy the date formerly occupied by Harry Potter 6. And while those fans are steaming, another set of fans are going to be very, very happy. A highly anticipated movie is now going to open a full month sooner than expected…
Twilight.
Queue high pitched screaming and squeals of delight.
Originally Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was scheduled to open on November 21, 2008 but yesterday was pushed back eight months to July 2009. Scheduling release dates is a chess game between studios, vying for not only the ideal weekend but scheduling blockbusters far apart enough so that one film does not deprive another of precious box office dollars.
So having a huge film like Harry Potter vacate a cherished Thanksgiving opening must have started a feeding frenzy at other studios. Well Summit Entertainment wasted no time occupying that slot, announcing today that Twilight would now hit movie theaters a full month ahead of schedule on that same date.
So while Potter fans mourn, Twilight fans rejoice.
haha, I just read about that on the Mtv site... I love it. Love it. Even if HBP wants their release date back, they'd be up against the much anticipated Twilight. _________________ Blame it on a simple twist of fate. ~ Bob Dylan "To commemorate a past event, you kill and eat an animal. well maybe Twilight will be the movie I see in Wales...its not certainty like HBP was though. HBP could still be moved back to a Christmas release though. *crosses her fingers and hopes* _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
really hope this means i can see twilight before new years now!
that would make it slightly less unbarable that america gets to see it before us _________________

This doesn't make up for HBP being moved at all. :/
Its just the first book, right?
Were you being serious then?
Yes?
I don't follow twilight. It actually sort of makes me angry that twilight is trying to steal HP's thunder. XD
I'll probably go see it anyway >.<
At any rate, it'd be absolutely hilarious if Harry Potter's release date was moved back to November 21st. Fans would explode.

I wonder which company would chicken out and move their movie premier night. It's like opening night musical chairs. _________________ Here's How!|Graphics

I meant when you said that its just the first book.
I don't know anything about the plot of the movie or book, but I assumed its in the same set up as LOTR and HP. One film per book. _________________ Here's How!|Graphics
Out of those two movies, Twilight is the one I want to see the most. Recently I have been feeling "meh" to the HP movies anyways. But I'm pretty sure that I will see HP also, in due time. _________________ How's this for a tensai?

yeah me too!
i've got so caught up in twilight i've completely forgot to get excited about hp.
but i guess now that they're further apart it gives me time to get all hyped up about hbp again. _________________

nothing could ever steal my hp thunder. I'd much rather have HBP this fall and Twilight next summer. I've almost read all the Twilight series and I just can't get as excited for it as I have been for hp. it just doesn't have the same magic. so yeah I'm kind of pissed too, that they moved it to hp's old date...but at the same time I want to laugh at the stupid people at WB. _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
im actually not all excited about seeing twilight... a lot of vampire movies just plain suck, especially the ones that are based on books. the only one that comes to mind that was good that was based on book is the interview with a vampire. i mean did anyone see blood and chocolate? it really sucked... theres others out there that i went and see but they were lame as hell. so when i think of twilight i kinda cringe at the thoughts of what they could do to that book. it might be the number 1 flop of the year... at least when it comes to hp movies i know what to expect, the plot is twisted to fit a movie. _________________
I guess this is really happening then... ='[ _________________ "Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to release HBP on Nov 21st 2008."
I wish they would have kept HP&THBP in November because I really do not like Twilight. _________________ Peace is a lie. There is only passion.

If HBP ends up being moved back to the 21st, Twilight will be the first to changet the opening night because it's the first movie, and they want it to be a hit, and theres no way it can compete with a HP film. And Summit and WB might realize there are HP fans who are also Twilight fans. _________________ "I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach." thanks to evanesco for the sig, and to JKR for the quote!
Stealing Harry Potter's thunder? Hardly. Twilight will do modestly in the box office (about as well as Eragon), whereas moving HBP to the summer means Warner Bros. is looking to make Half Blood Prince the summer headlining blockbuster. Summer is the "blockbuster" season, as it comes to happen, and WB apparently has nothing better up it's sleeve.
Arabella did the math, and HP actually has only released two of their movies in the summer. OotP, which was hyped up with Accio July and PoA, which made the least amount of money.
You can't really assume that because The Dark Knight did well, Harry Potter will, too. WB is taking a huge risk, putting HP up against tougher competition.
And the fact that they blatantly admitted it was for money is pathetic. Statistically speaking, they would have done just fine, perhaps even better, in the November slot. _________________ Blame it on a simple twist of fate. ~ Bob Dylan "To commemorate a past event, you kill and eat an animal. Sorry, but the Thanksgiving opening has always been the Potter thing and I fully don't appreciate this. _________________ Yas and Simmy - Putting Luna on catwalks since 2008!
