yes i wrote the title in parsel tongue... but this is a real question. we have seen the advantages of speaking snake ie. the basilisk, nagini, etc. but do any other animals get a special language? i mean if harry could speak say.. owl he could send messages to sirius without parchment. (i guess sirius would have to speak it also.)

other creatures have their own tongue (mermish for example) what animals do you think would have been useful and what would you name the language?

i say owls and i would name it hoot-tongue

Spoiler:

although that would make speaker hooter mouths, so maybe i need a better name for it

Well, I read somewhere that Dumbledore could speak Mermish and...The goblin language (forgot the word for it). No doubt Parcel Tongue was so played up because of its ties to the Dark Side, but eh. Perhaps the Giants have their own language as well. How about werewolves? Do they snarl at each other? I can imagine a teaparty composed of civilized werewolves, all snarling at each other politely. Muahahaha! Dunno, I'd like Hermoine to meow to her cat a couple of times.

that would be cool. what about say the animals around hogwarts or in the forest... or the spiders? it would be very rude for us to assume they speak english. why did jk ignore the other languages. or is it just house animals and if so why didnt any badgers get mentioned? or was it written off with the fact that nothing huff was told.

did faukes have his own language?

Well...phoenixes are birds...and as far as I know, birds don't have separate languages..I figure one species can figure out the chirping of another just fine (I'm sure you're aware that this is complete guesstimation on my part). But, he is magical...therefore, he might. But yeah, I figure being able to speak to something dangerous is an asset (giants/spiders/werewolves). What about Dementors? How do they communicate? By Sighing? Hehe.

Christ, I totally forgot those! Now that you have said some flying creatures, I remembered the Dragon they escaped on. It'd be nice to be able to communicate with one, but I doubt that it is within the physical capability of a human.

depends on the human if DD can speak mermish, i think the languages of all creatures could be mastered.

but the original question is meant to be more towards animals. if snakes can be spoken to.. which other animals would you think would be beneficial to wizards and witches?

Well, there were other animals mentioned. Or do you mean animals which are non-magical?

yes mainly non magical. i mean a basilisk is an enchanted creature but harry spoke to the snake in the beginning also.

so lets say you can speak horse.. can you talk to unicorns?

I'm going to have to say yes on the Unicorn bit. It might be a different species of horse, but I doubt they each have their own neigh for the same thing. But really, why would communication to non-magical creatures be beneficial at all?

Oh yeah, I think the only mention of a troll is in the first book. But 200 languages? There has to be something magical about that.

Well, I suppose owls could be useful for people who don't know how to communicate with a Patronus charm. But do you really need to be able to speak to an owl in its own tongue?

i would assume thats the only way for it to truly communicate. i mean i guess u can teach it tricks. let me give another example and im sorry its not HP

when gandolf was captured he whispered to a moth and the moth flew off with his orders. it was a random moth so he didnt get to teach it "fetch" he spoke moth to it and it flew away to do as it was ordered to do.

lets say a wizard is lost in the wilderness and can speak to the animals. the wildlife can help him.

Perhaps, but in that case, winged creatures would have a huge advantage of being able to cross any terrain with constant speed. And even then, i seem to remember that animals have a mind of their own, they may not always agree. Can they not be Imperiused? Even if you can't talk to them? Or some other form of magic to at least persuade them? I think perhaps tiny animals like a rodent or something of the sort could be useful for scouting and spying.

Hedwig understood Harry's English. And she could communicate to Harry with her expressions. So why bother learning hoottongue?

Yeah, That's exactly what I was talking about before.

talking english to an owl was much like talking to noobs. they nod, look as if they understand... and fly away clueless

owls know tricks

theyre basically a carrier pidgeon

its not the same as saying go get dumbledore timmy is stuck in a well

its fly to so and so then you tie a note to their leg

its not like theyre really doing anything spectacular

Have you ever told an owl to deliver a message? Did the owl comply? If it did, it's truly spectacular imo.

Why not? Unless...

Maybe all wizards actually speak hoottongue and don't even realize it -- like Parseltongue! Smile
