well, the malfoys seem to be regulars there so the hand of glory could've been at any time

im not sure what happened with the cabinets, i dont even remember if it's explained in the books

one cabinet is in Borgin and Burkes, the other one was at hogwarts on 5th year, i have no idea how it got there, but malfoy found out about it and took it to the room of requirements

He definitely had the hand before that, as Ron mentions it in chapter 7:

Quote:
"Maybe he's broken his Hand of Glory" said Ron vaguely, as he attempted to straighten his broomstick's bent tail twigs. "Remember that shrivelled-up arm Malfoy had?"

Malfoy found about them in OotP and told DD about it at the end of HBP, which Harry overheard. When tehe twins locked Montague in the cabinent, he was able to hear conversations from both inside of Hogwarts and Borgin and Burkes. We know the cabinent at Hogwarts is broken, because Peeves dropped it in CoS. That was the one Malfoy spent all year trying to fix. It was already in the RoR, Filch put it in there after Peeves broke it.

Draco admired the Hand of Glory in the beginning of CoS, his father could have bought it for him at any time over the years.

When Draco went into teh store at the beginning of HBP, he was inquiring about the cabinent. Draco was desperate for the owner to not sell. The necklace Draco bought later on, at the off chance it would help curse DD when he started getting frustrated that he might not be able to fix the cabinent.

Harry had just finished agrueling quidditch practice. He tracked mud through the halls and was caught by Filch who was upset because he was the one who would now have to clean those halls.
He takes Harry to his office to give him detention when they heart a loud bang. Filch goes running out of the room. Harry discovers his Kwikspell papers. Filch comes running back into the room justas Harry plops the papers back onto the desk....
CoS ch 8, pg 128 (US ed, paperback)
"That vanishing cabinet was extremely valuable!" he was saying gleefully to Mrs. Norris. "We'll have Peeves out this time, my sweet - "

Montague was pushed into that broken cabinet by the Weasley twins in OotP. Later on in OotP Montague reappers in a toilet. Draco said he managed to apparate into there somehow.

1) That is what Draco and Montague thinks happened. However, it could have been some other magical occruance we arent aware of.
2) If you were trapped in a cabinet for an unknown amount of time, I think it would be possible to be desperate enough to make it happen, especially since we don't know what other magics those cabinets possessed.
3) My theory is - Monatgue was sort of stuck in between Hogwarts and the store. He was neither in the store, nor in Hogwarts. So he wasn't really apparating into Hogwarts or inside of Hogwarts. It's almost like he found a loophole.

He didn't repeat a year... Marcus Flint did, though.

I think it's really interesting that he showed up in the toilet, actually. Maybe that's where the cabinet was, lol.

It's possible that Draco did find it in the bathroom.. it all depends on where Flich put it after Peeves dropped it.

Do you think that in this instance the use of the word, toilet, basically means the whole bathroom? The cabinet was in the bathroom and the bathroom is where Fred and George stuffed Montague into the cabinet and that is where Montague returned to.

In OotP, maybe Malfoy thought Montague apparated into the toilet (bathroom). He most definitely (like everyone else) hasn't read 'Hogwarts, a History' and would think that it possible to apparate in Hogwarts. Thus, this led to Malfoy's investigation of the vanishing cabinet and discovery of its powers.

We were only joking, hun. A human being can not possibly fit in a toilet bowl... not that I have ever tried. Smile

I don't now if Filch would actually leave a priceless, yet broken, cabinet in the boys bathroom. Unless Fred and George dragged it in there.....

I can picture him getting out, all wet, one foot still in the bowl with Moaning Myrtle watching him, smirking.
