The Veil is known or the room it is in is known as the Death Chamber. Once you walk through the Veil it kills you, or really sends you to the un-dead. You walk through it and you die. Bellatrix casted the spell on Sirius and he fell backwards into the Veil and died. Do you get it now?

The Death Chamber - (this is where Sirus dies) In the pit is a raised, stone dais, on which stands an ancient arch with an ancient, tattered black curtain hanging from it. Despite an absence of wind, it continuously flutters slightly, and entrances its viewers. Harry Potter hears faint voices from beyond the veil when he come near it in the books. It was through this archway that Sirius Black, Harry Potter's godfather, fell through and died in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It is implied that the veil somehow leads to the afterlife, as some (perhaps those who have seen someone die) are able to hear voices whispering from behind it.

does this help any more???

I'm still curious, though. In an interview with MuggleNet, JK Rowling said that the curtain was NOT used for executions, but rather for studying.

JK Rowling/Mugglenet interview wrote:
MA: Our third winner question is from Monique Padelis, who's 15, of Surrey. How and when was the veil created?

JKR: The veil's been there as long as the Ministry of Magic has been there, and the Ministry of Magic has been there, not as long as Hogwarts, but a long time. We're talking hundreds of years. It's not particularly important to know exactly when, but centuries, definitely.

MA: Was it used as an execution chamber or just studying?

JKR: No, it's just studying. The Department of Mysteries is all about studying. They study the mind, the universe, death...

So, if it's just a tool for studying, then what exactly is behind that curtain? I mean, if it was only supposed to be used for studying death, then simply going through it wouldn't kill somebody. Also, the curse aimed at Sirius was never specified as an Avada Kedavra curse. Obviously, Sirius is dead. The question is, how the @#!% did THAT happen?

It was used for studying death... but that doesn't mean that it isn't deadly.

Well, they had to use AK in the movie, since the veil wasn't actually described. If I had watched the movie but not seen the book, then I would still be completely baffled as to what the hell the veil was and what the point was in it. They should have at least slipped in the short conversation between Harry and Luna about the veil at the end.

In the book, I believe that Bellatrix stunned Sirius, even though some on this site think that it was an AK that she threw at him.

The book says that Sirius dodged a red light from Bellatrix's wand, and then he got struck by another light. Since the books were told from Harry's PoV, then a green light would have been specified. Harry knows very well what the green light means, and it would have been obvioud to Harry that Sirius was dead even without his falling behind the veil.

Since it just says another light, then I am lead to assume that the light was the same color. I know that the stunning spell has a red light, but there could be multiple spells that are paired with res lights. It just seems to me that Jo was trying to make it obvious, since she refers to the red light from stunners so often in OotP.
