Those are the amazing words that started it all. The Star Wars phenomenon throughout the world, but has anyone ever stopped to think about what they actually mean. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... Why does George Lucas use A long time ago when this movie takes place in the future? I've never really thought about this myself, anyone know? _________________

Because it doesn't take place in the future ... Star Wars does not take place in our galaxy, and the whole story did take place thousands of years ago.
George's idea, however, with filming the movies in a half-non-linear fashion was to show technology regressing in that galaxy. Episodes i-iii were made at a later date for a reason; after the empire took over everything on all planets changed dramatically ... Things became darker and life wasn't as grand as it had been before Darth Vader. So the older movies look just as accurate as the newer ones ... they were suppost to be that way.
Does it make sense now? _________________ "Never to suffer would never to have been blessed."

Yeah its a pet peeve of mine when people say it takes place in the future...he clearly says A LONG TIME AGO. its in a galaxy far far away, so they could easily be far more advanced than us long long ago. I think he also chose "a long time ago" because it gives it a mythic or legendary feeling. which it is, as well as a work of science fiction. in the phrase "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" he's tying those two aspects together as one. _________________

I always took it to mean that the Narrator was telling a story that happened a long time ago. So that would mean the Narrator was even further in the future than the story was.
I a galaxy far, far, away..I think we're the galaxy that is far away. Afterall, they go to Pluto and the Moon, which is in our galaxy. Unless they come to our galaxy freom their galaxy....?
But yeah, I think the order of time goes... us, the Star Wars, then the narrator who write abotu the battle in a galxy, far far away. And I think the galaxy he is referring to is ours. _________________

pluto and the moon? when do they go there? no I still think its in the past, because if its in another galaxy time doesn't matter with technology. thats the beauty of it. I always thought it was really cool that its futuristic yet still in the past. in another galaxy, anything could happen. _________________

So.. instead of just laughing at me, how about being productive and explaining it to me. This would be a great oppurtunity to teach someone about something you enjoy. _________________

I'm not a complete Star Wars nerd or anything, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be taken literally: This happened a long time in the past. Since it isn't on Earth, this "could have happened" a long time ago. _________________
