Hey everyone! I'm a big fan of fantasy literature (one of the reasons I reached for HP ^^) and I'd like to ask whether you like it or not in general?
If so, what are your favourite authors, titles? I'd appreciate recommendations and reviews.
I generally like to read stories situated in the typical fantasy worlds. I mean with magic, elves, dragons, "evil vs good" and such. There are some exceptions, but rare. At least 1 of these elements must be present for me to reach for the book, not knowing what is it about. Sometimes I like it, sometimes not, but at least it's fantasy xD
I don't like Sci-Fi much, but there are some titles I'm very fond of.
Some people say, that I'm narrow-minded, because I read almost only fantasy. But in my opinion you can find exactly the same values there as in every other book. They can be equally rich and well written. Is it wrong of me to simply choose the form I want to be taught that values? _________________

I guess I enjoy fantasy more than sci fi, but I do like some of it.
Though I probably lean more towards horror/gothic or classic literature. _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once. But by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog. ~ Dwight Schrute |

I think fantasy is just better suited to books than sci-fi...sci-fi better for definately tv and movies, though fantasy does well there too. _________________

For example its's boring to me to read about some space ships, machines, techniqe and all. When it comes to fantasy it's easier to imagine what's happening for me Cause in fantasy - author can put anything into a book, name it whatever he/she likes, and in Sci-fi its all based on already existing stuff... The descriptions are more detailed and based on what we already know about machines, physics laws etc In case of fantasy, all that matters is our imagination _________________

I prefer Fantasy much more. Like Arabella said, Sci=Fi tends to work better on the screen than in words. Fantasy works both ways, but I actually like it better in books, if the writing is done well. If teh writing is good enough, you should be able to picture the scene play out in your head. Like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I remember reading the book being able to imagine all the rooms and the products and just falling in love with the chocolate river. You didnt need to see the rooms to imagine them. Sci-fi, on the other hand, is so exact that you almost have to see it to understand what the author is trying to explain. _________________

there are also many instances where they cross over. Star Wars for example. Its sci-fi because of lightsabers and deathstars and space ships and aliens and galaxies and stuff but its deeply rooted in jedi/sith lore. the force isn't scientific, its fantastic. _________________

Some sci fi makes for good reading - Bradbury's stuff is excellent. I'd also put something like Brave New World or Canticle for Liebowitz in the sci fi category - both great books. _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. | I like both, Sci-fi isnt just aliens and machines, its what could possibly happen given DNA knowlledge and what we know of history. Its what could be, not what is. Fantasy is anything! With a mixture of both worlds you get a magnificent story and you cant really tell where the fiction begins or ends! |
