This has to do with the schools website filters, and blocks. All schools use filtering software to prevent students from looking at bad content or sites that may contain viruses that spread across the network. Chats may be blocked to save the networks bandwidth.

I know this is bad to say but if you ever wanted to use a site that is blocked by your school you could always use a proxy network.

This is very bad advice seeing as IRC.wyldryde.net networks have most proxy's blacklisted and blocked, use of a proxy will get you BANNED from the network.

I only recommended it just to get him on while he was at school, not to do any damage or anything.
