I was looking at something a couple months ago (cause i was wondering that too) I can't remember though, if it was a passage from the book or just a quote from JKR, but it said that he was to young to remember Lilly's death, plus a light was blinding him and he never saw Quirrell actually die. So that's why it took until Cedric. I thought that was weird though too. _________________

jk has mentioned that before.... he was in his cot, so he didnt see his mother die. and even if he did, he was too young to appreciate death. and he passed out when quirrell died.
what i dont understand was on the return trip from hogwarts, why didnt harry see the thestrals? or did they walk from the school to the train, and carriages are only for the first day of classes _________________

The reason why Harry didn't see the threstrals onhis way home from Hogwarts at the end of GoF was because you see the threstrals after the death of the person sinks in.

In the fifth book, Harry can see the Thestrals. Can you?
Yes, I can, definitely. That is a really good question, because it enables me to clear up a point. The letters that I've had about the Thestrals! Everyone has said to me that Harry saw people die before could see the Thestrals. Just to clear this up once and for all, this was not a mistake. I would be the first to say that I have made mistakes in the books, but this was not a mistake. I really thought this one through. Harry did not see his parents die. He was one year old and in a cot at the time. Although you never see that scene, I wrote it and then cut it. He didn't see it; he was too young to appreciate it. When you find out about the Thestrals, you find that you can see them only when you really understand death in a broader sense, when you really know what it means. Someone said that Harry saw Quirrell die, but that is not true. He was unconscious when Quirrell died, in Philosopher's Stone. He did not know until he came around that Quirrell had died when Voldemort left his body. Then you have Cedric. With Cedric, fair point. Harry had just seen Cedric die when he got back into the carriages to go back to Hogsmeade station. I thought about that at the end of Goblet, because I have known from the word go what was drawing the carriages. From Chamber of Secrets, in which there are carriages drawn by invisible things, I have known what was there. I decided that it would be an odd thing to do right at the end of a book. Anyone who has suffered a bereavement knows that there is the immediate shock but that it takes a little while to appreciate fully that you will never see that person again. Until that had happened, I did not think that Harry could see the Thestrals. That means that when he goes back, he saw these spooky things. It set the tone for Phoenix, which is a much darker book. |

Wouldnt it be very normal and easy to walk in front of the carriage. Just that you for example want to see it up front. If you would do that, you would bump into the animals... so how does that work?
This same could apply if you would go to the forest.. _________________ My signature is entirly privet and will not be shown to anyone without permission.

I'm not sure what you're asking.... It's a real animal, so if you walked into it, you'd bump into it.
The carriages were lined up, you would put your stuff into it and climb in. I don't see why you would walk in front of it, if the door was on the side.
And if they did bump into them, then what's the big deal? Thestrals weren't a secret animal, I'm sure some students knew they existed. _________________

I'm sure other Wizards know about them. Remember on GOF Karkaroff bumped into Harry while he was invisible but after asking and getting no reply he assumed it was just an animal. Do you think he thought it was a Thestral? _________________ Join Reality Of It All!!!

They would be totally freaked out though. Because a lot of people didnt know about them.. They kinda seem to think Harry was crazy until they heard he wasnt the only one... right?
btw, in the book Nevil can see the threstrals too, but in the movie he seemed as suprised as Hermoine and Ron that Harry says he sees a Threstral _________________ My signature is entirly privet and will not be shown to anyone without permission.

Professor Karkaroff is the head of Durmstang institute. (I'm not sure if I'm spelling his name correctly.)
GOF is a shorter term for "Goblet Of Fire." _________________ Join Reality Of It All!!!

You spelled it right.
The scene is in the part of the book right after Hagrid shows Harry the dragons. Harry is under the invisibilty cloak and is sneaking back to the castle to talk to Sirius through the fire. He bumps into Karkaroff.
I think he might have thought it was one... a definite possibility. _________________

There is a reason behind this Threastal error. Maybe the seeing someone die thing lasts for a limited time...but how old was Luna when she saw her mother die? If its when she was really little or under ten, then I have no clue in this error. _________________

Yes, there is a reason. If you scroll up you'll find out that it wasn't an error at all.
Luna was 9 years old when her mother died. _________________

Okay, maybe the Threastal seeing time is right because he saw Lily die at a young age. But...Quirrel didn't necessarily die...he was the other face of Voldemort, so, precisely he would have to die with Voldemort, lol Im confused now! _________________

Harry didn't see Quirell die. He was unconscious. You might tbe confusing the movie and the book. The movie isn't canon, though. In the book Harry loses consciousness and does not see Quirell die. _________________

Thanks Ginny, I really did get confused, so maybe he lost the limited time to see the Threastals, but after the Cedric killed incident, he could see them again. _________________

If you read the thread you'd know that you have to accept death before you can see them. _________________ Join Reality Of It All!!!

I just read that question, well comment answered by JK... The thing is that when Quirrel died Harry just saw a green bolt of light, he didn't see Quirrel dead, and when he was one year old, he couldn't remember, so his parents don't really count... _________________
