How does one invent spells, it seems that most spells in the Harry Potter World are either from Latin or Greek. So i guess if you knew the Latin or Greek meaning of a word, then you could turn them into spells or charms.

And if one did invent a spell, how does it become a spell that everyone eles can preform, and for it to have the same effect.

J.K. never really explained how spells are invented. All we know is that Luna's mother died trying to invent them. i don't think language has to do with inventing them, J.K. just choose to use other languages in her spell so they actually meant something.

JKR invented the spells and used Latin (mostly) for their names.

I always wondered if spells are invented or discovered.

J.K. Rowling used a lot of her spells from Latin roots.

I think the reason JKR used latin is because it also dated spells, you know, it gave them a time frame of how long they have been around for, thats why you dont see too many new spells floating around, I believe they are mostly invented from the old world.

hm. that is a really good question... i suppose you could discover new spells the way you discover to fly or something of that nature. maybe you have to search though very old wizzarding family heirlooms for old spell books that have spells that have died out

Hm? but Snape said that he made his spell "Sectumsempra" if I'm correct. He said that it was his own spell that was used against him. I guess people could actually create spells but have to carefully say each word to prevent something really bad happening. Kinda like making a potion, just that the ingredients are words.

yep. i think that spells are invented; however, there might be a few basic spells that are discovered. then out of these discovered spells, you can stretch them out a bit and "invent" your own spell.
