Technically he was, I guess... beacuse he has the Dark Mark and remained faithful to Voldemort. But it is interesting how he was in Gryffindor, the only Gryff DE we know of thus far, and was such a wimp. Out of the series he has to be my least favorite... especially for the reason you gave.

He must of had loads of potion if he could keep as mad eye for all that time considering how long the polyjuice potion worked for when harry ron and hermione use it in the chamber of secrets

He would probably jump down into the trunk pluck a few hairs and climb out. If he didn't climb out you can assume he used magic. Also, It's possible he used the Levicorpse spell to take him out and put him back in the trunk constantly, it was a common spell amongst the Death Eaters. |

^ he could have used a summoning charm. Fred used one in Deathly Hallows to obtain hairs from a muggle boy.
