Okay, I'm re-reading GOF (2nd time). It was my 6th-favorite book in the series to begin with and re-reading it isn't helping this one issue I have.

Why, if Moody was really Barty Jr., is he helpful and kind of "good"? For instance, why teach the class the unforgivable curses? Why run Harry through Imperius five times until he can throw it off easily? Why does he show concern for Neville after Neville is upset over Cruciatus? Why does he help Harry out of a tight spot with Snape?

I never got that.

And also, when the cup takes Harry back to Hogwarts, how does it do that? Aren't Porkeys enchanted with a specific time and place they are supposed to go and that's it? If Barty Jr. enchanted the cup to be a portkey, he wouldn't have given any return trip; indeed he was depending on there being NO return trip necessary!

It's also a little unbelievable that Dumbledor was around Moody all year, but it didn't occur to him that Moody was an imposter until tragedy had occurred.

Eh, oh well. Not JKR's best work on plot twists.

He was being nice to Harry and everybody else to get rid of any suspicion. If he wasn't acting like a teacher, or like a good person, it would arouse suspicion and mess up their whole plan. As far as the port key, that I do not know.

The cup was supposed to be charmed to take teh winner to the outside of the maze. Fake!Moody changed it so that it would take them to the graveyard, instead.
My theory, as to why it still worked in taking Harry back to the outside of the maze, is that in order to make a portkey, you need Ministry permission, it has to all be set up in advance. SO to keep the portkey's original intentions, it needed to also perfrom it's orginal duties, this is, taking the winner back to the outside of the maze.

As for the rest of it... Barty Jr, had to keep pretending to be the good guy.
And it makes you wonder.... was he ever bad, or did he turn bad? He was never given a fair trial. It is said that he could have been at the wrong place at the wrong time....
Perhaps Azkaban, his father, and his situation messed him up.

Blame it on a simple twist of fate.
