I got this really confusing problem which wouldn't be hard except for the fact that I have to make it into an equation instead of solving it. Help? Here's the problem:

Terri has 1/4 as many Canadian stamps as her father has in his collection. She has 1/7 as many Canadian stamps as her grandfather has. How many stamps do each have if together they have 120 Canadian stamps?

I got 120 = s1/4 + s1/7 + s

But I really don't think it's right.

Help!!!

They're really confusing...and no matter what your teacher says, you don't use problems like that in the real world...

Isn't it s + 4s + 7s = 120? Or 12s = 120

(Solving to check)
Spoiler:

Terri's stamps(s)
Father's stamps(f)
G/father's stamps(g)

12s = 120
s = 10

f = 4(10)
f = 40

g = 7(10)
g = 70

s + g + f = 120
10 + 40 + 70 = 120
120 = 120

no, because it's not 4 and 7, but 1/4 and 1/7. like fractions.

Terri has a quarter of her fathers amount so her fathers amount is four times hers, understand? Try and solve your equation, I don't think it would work, but then again I haven't done algebra in like nearly two years. I miss it so much.

Nooo I love teaching math, let me try and explain.

By my math, Terri has 10 stamps, her father has 40.
So, her father has four times the stamps then she has, yes? (4 x 10 = 40)
And, "Terri has 1/4 as many Canadian stamps as her father" (10 = ¼ of 40)

Understand?

So do you understand why my equation is right? If not I'll explain more, these things are really easy when you get the understanding behind 'em.

When do you find out what the answer is? Lol I wanna know if I was wrong and I've forgotten even basic algebra in the few years since I've done it.

I'm a little confused by the format of this equation. Is it:

(x/y + 1/x) / (y/x + 1/x)
